Iraq’s Bonds Yield Highest Return in Emerging Markets:
•Merrill Lynch & Company’s emerging market bond indexes showed that Iraq’s $2.7 billion of 5.8% bonds due 2028 increased in value by 45% from over the last year since August 2007. Iraqi bonds rallied despite the large lossesseen elsewhere in credit markets. The interest rate spread above U.S. Treasuries that investors in Iraqi bonds expect to receive has declined to 4.84 percentage points from 7.26 percentage points a year ago. This spread is narrower than for the notes of the Ohio based banks, National City Corp. and KeyCorp. Since August2007, Iraq’s bonds had the highest returns in the emerging markets and their yield spread is smaller than for Argentina, Ecuador, Ukraine, and Venezuela, according to JPMorgan indexes
