This Aussie Cousin Beat Out Everyone

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) hiked rates last night, just as I believed they would. The RBNZ increased the Official Cash Rate (OCR) by 25 basis points to 2.75%.
RBNZ Governor Alan Bollard said: “The economy has entered its http://worldcurrencywatch.com/2010/06/10/wp-content/blogs.dir/3/files/fxu/061010_fxud_image1-1.gifsecond year of recovery with growth becoming more broad-based.”
Bollard went on to say a lot of very positive things about the New Zealand economy, and all the Asian economies.
You could call this jawboning the currency higher, but in this instance, I actually think he has good reason to brag about what’s happening in the East.
Not surprisingly the New Zealand dollar (a.k.a. the “kiwi” in Forex circles) was the best performer overnight. It wasn’t just the cash rate hike that did it either. It was the fact that the Central Bank Governor didn’t try to water down the reason for the hiked rate.
So, that leaves Pandora’s Box wide open for additional rate hikes in New Zealand! That’s great news for the New Zealand dollar going forward.
Perhaps the New Zealand dollar could be another commodity currency like the Canadian dollar that rises in the face of a possible double-dip recession. We’ll have to wait and see.
